usually while separating heavy insoluble solids from liquids,the process of sedimentation is followed by decantation. Why?

This is because sedimentation makes the heavy insoluble impurities settle down at the bottom of the container. Then in order to separate the impurities, without disturbing the sediments, the liquid is poured into another container (which is decantation).
