When iron comes in contact with air and moisture it forms rust a brown layer on the metal that gradually eats away the iron. Rust is nothing but iron oxide, and it contains hydrated iron oxides or iron hydroxides.  With time and proper environment of air and moisture, any iron mass will convert to rust and will ultimately disintegrate and become brittle.
