Change the following sentences that are in direct speech into indirect speech.

Two businessmen, Shah and Ahmed, are at a lunch meeting. They are waiting for their co-worker, Ishaq, who is late.

“We will wait for Ishaq before we start,” says Shah. “Is he here yet?”

“No, he is on his way,” replies Ahmed.

“Yes, he said he left the office 30 minutes ago,” says Shah. “He is going to arrive.”

“Traffic may be bad, because it usually doesn’t take this long,” Ahmed says.

Shah looks at his watch. “He will be feeling badly about being late,” he says. “I know he hates to be kept waiting, so he doesn’t like to do it to other people

To narrate the spoken words of the person it is written in two ways there are:

Direct and indirect speech.

From one person to another it is the usual way to convey a message.

Direct speech refers to the actual words of the speaker being quoted.  It is enclosed in quotation marks or inverted commas. To introduce the spoken words of the speaker colon or comma is inserted after said.

Whereas, in indirect speech refers to the speech in which the actual words of the speaker are changed due to the words were spoken in the past. Changes occur simultaneously in the sentence with pronouns.

Hence, the above direct speech sentences would be written as:

Shah says to Ahmed that they will wait for Ishaq before they start the meeting and asks him if he has come.

Ahmed replied that Ishaq was on the way as he had told him that he had left office 30 minutes ago. Shah assures that Ishaq will definitely arrive.

Ahmed said that the traffic may be bad as it usually doesn't take that long.

Shah looking at his watch said that he would be feeling bad about being late. He further said that Ishaq hates to be kept waiting, so he does not like others to keep waiting for him.
