Given:

Cell potential of Co=182V

Cell potential of Mn = -113V

To find:

Cell potential and cell representation.

Solution:

formula used for finding cell potential,

cell potential of cell = cell potential of cathode - cell potential of anode

electrode reactions are:

at anode: 3×( Mn(s) → Mn²⁺(aq) + 2e⁻ )

at cathode: 2×( Co³⁺(aq) + 3e⁻ → Co(s) )

anode representation is Mn(s)IMn²⁺(aq)

and cathode representation is Co³⁺(aq)|Co(s)

so, the overall galvanic cell representation is,

    Mn(s)|Mn²⁺(aq)║Co³⁺(aq)|Co(s)

therefore, electrode potential will be calculated as-

  E = E at cathode - E at anode

  E = E of Mn²⁺|Mn - E at Co³⁺|Co

  E = 182V - (- 113V)

  E = 295V
