We have to find the value of k , if the roots of the quadratic equation 3x² - kx + 48 = 0 are real and equal.

solution : The roots of a quadratic equation ax² + bx + c = 0 are real and equal only when b² = 4ac

for 3x² - kx + 48 = 0

a = 3 , b = -k and c = 48

so, (-k)² = 4 × 3 × 48

⇒k² = 4 × 3 × 3 × 16 = 4 × 9 × 16

⇒k² = (2 × 3 × 4)²

⇒k = ± 24

Therefore the value of k is ±24
