Herapathite or iodoqunine sulfate is used in the production of polariser. it was probably first man made polariser. The composition of herapathite has been shown by the Danish chemist Sophus Mads Jorgensen in 1877.

polariser is an optical filter that can filter a beam of undefined or mixed polarisation into a beam of well defined polarisation (it is known as polarized light ).

see figure , a beam of light which is unpolarized strikes into a polariser and after emerging from polariser, beam is well defined or polarised. there are many uses of polarized light. for instance, 3D effect, liquid crystal display, decoration etc...
