Rule: When there is an expression of the form A + B = C, we call both A and B the addend and C the sum.

Given: the expression 5 + 6 = 11

Solution:

  • Comparing the expression with the rule expression, we can say that
  • A = 5, B = 6 and C = 11.

  • Thus both 5 and 6 are Addend and 11 is their Sum.

Example:

  • Let us take another example 2 + 3 = 5.
  • Then both 2 and 3 are addend and 5 is their sum.

Note:

  • For subtraction: a - b = c,
  • we call a the minuend, b the subtrahend and c the difference.
