When phenol is treated with hot conc. nitric acid in the presence of conc. sulphuric acid yellow coloured picric acid is produced. Note: The mixture of concentrated nitric acid and concentrated sulphuric acid in the ratio 1 : 1 is called the nitrating mixture.
