Because the sperms are produced in the seminiferous tubules of the testes and are then transferred from the seminifeous tubules into a long tube called epididymis which is a tightly packed mass formed by the repeatedly folded long duct originated from combined seminiferous tubules in the testes. So, from the seminiferous tubules the spermatozoa or sperms are passed into the epididymis. Since it is s very long tube about 6m in length, it takes about 3 weeks for the sperm to travel the whole length of this duct. During this time, the sperms become mature and motile. So that the mature sperms or spermatozoa are stored and protected within the epididymis until it is released during the ejaculation.
