nomenclature and classification of alkane =

alkanes have had a suffix of identities these compounds are named methane through  decanes, all are alkanes made up of chains and branched chain

 

alkanes are made by chains and branched-chain carbons and hydrogen atoms. their general formula is  

(CₙH₂ₙ + ₂) for alkanes while (CₙH₂ₙ + 2 -2ₙ) is a formula of cycloalkanes.        

cyclobutane is an example of alkane.

1-butane is branched alkane.  

when the 2 or more compounds have a similar molecular formula but different carbon skeleton these are referred to as chain isomers metamers = it is due to different alkyl chains on either side of the functional group in the molecule.

structural isomers = compounds having the same molecular formula but differ in structure. examples isopentane and neopentane.

position isomers = when 2 or more compounds differ in the position of the substituent. an atom or functional group.  

chirality = the molecule is known as chiral if it has alpha hydrogen/carbon or if has 4 different functional groups.

enantiomers = stereoisomers which are mirror images to each other and not superimpose to each other non-superimposable mirror images are called enantiomers.
