Answer:
Areas of shallow water are very light blue , this is seen in atolls in the Pacific (I have not been there), it is seen in the Bahamas where I have lots of experience, and familiar to a lot of people but may be not noticed is the sail from Bitter End to Anegada, or approaching Anegada from the Ocean which I have done hundreds of times. This light blue is reflected in the cumulus clouds that almost always form over shallow patches of water later in the day, versus the hard grey that is reflected from the darker/deeper water on the bottom of low cumulus clouds. As well, various sea birds hunt during the day and return to land for evening, if an hour or two before sunset you see Frigate birds beeline in a set direction, there is land within about 100 miles in that direction, they can fly fast and have been measured BVI to SXM in two hours by going up and catching wind currents. Also, have you ever noticed that waves approach beaches parallel? Even on the lee side of an island. Well, the waves converge around and island and on the lee side form a pattern
This wave pattern is apparent when you are off shore, not even for an island, but the swell will do similar over a sea mount, breakers would give it away also.
