Oral communication has the advantage of context, immediate feedback, and the ability to use kinesics to better communicate.
Let me explain.
The communication process involves the sender creating a message and getting it to the receiver. The other half of the process is receiving feedback from the recipient. The more effective you are at creating your message, the more efficiently the recipient can interpret your message. This is where oral communication shines.
As humans, we infer much from body language and vocal tone. We are less prone to misinterpretation, especially if both parties are attentive to each other. Oral communication, specifically in person, allows you to use body language and facial expression to help reinforce the content of the message, thus allowing the recipient to interpret properly.
With written communication, such as email, letter, or text, the recipient can interpret emotions or meanings that are influenced by their personal environment or context. For example, if you were to send a text that said simply, “Where are you?” The recipient might assume you are upset with them or being accusatory, and respond in kind. This could be due to insecurity or guilt on the recipient’s part, not in the meaning of the text. By speaking those words, your voice can impart the tone that the message should take.
Feedback for written communication, unless you’re passing a note and can see their reaction, takes more time. If you send an email, you have to wait for a response (or no response) for actual feedback. Oral communication allows for immediate feedback, whether it is oral communication, facial expression, or body language.
