The colors black-red-gold go back to the beginning of the 19th century, when most german states were (more or less) trying to be independent of France. Those colors came to signify the idea of a greater german nation (you have to remember that back in those days, Germany was a collection of many smaller states) and the idea of german nationalism itself. Incidentally, those colors are the same as the heraldic colors of the HRE before.
