Land degradation means the decreasing fertility of the land (soil). There can be many factors of land degradation such as :-
1. Use of excessive amount of artificial fertilizers such as Urea and Potash in the farms decreases the fertility of the land.
2. Over grazing is also a major cause of land degradation as it causes loss of the grasses due to which the upper layer of the soil becomes superficial and due to wind it causes soil erosion.
3. Excessive cut down of trees is also a reason for land degradation as the roots of the trees bind the soil together and reduce soil erosion but nowadays trees are being cut down and this increases soil erosion.
4. Indiscriminate mining is also a major reason of land degradation as it breaks the rocks below the Earth's surface which weakens the upper surface of the Earth and causes land slides etc.
Prevention :-
◼ People should reduce the use of artificial fertilizers.
◼ Reduce the cut down of trees and plant more and more trees.
◼ The grazing field should be changed time to time to let the grasses to grow up.
◼ People should stop excessive mining which can cause harm to people as well as the nature.
