The Alchemist : has quite a few characters. Many of them are stock characters who do nothing more than provide motivation for Santiago to go somewhere, do something, or say something. For example, Santiago is attacked/captured by "bad guys" (raiders, bandits, or whatever you want to call them) several times throughout the book. This makes them (the attackers) important characters for the plot, but they are essentially nameless and faceless entities that are not really explored in depth by the narrative.
