A mole is the quantity of any pure substance (element or compound) that contains one Avogadro’s number (6.02 *10^23) of molecules of that substance. Avogadro’s number is the conversion factor from atomic mass units (AMU) to grams (1 gram = 6.02 * 10^23 AMU). Thus one mole of hydrogen has a mass of 1 gram. One mole of water (H2O) has a mass of 18 grams. Molar mass is a convenient means of keeping track of the masses of various compounds involved in chemical reactions.
