Vegetative propagation refers to the process of plant reproduction where by a fragment of a parents plant is taken in order to produce more plants.

Advantages are :

  • The plants grown by vegetative propagation usually needs less attention in their early years than the plants grown from seeds.
  • The plants are genetically similar.
  • It helps in producing those plants which either produce very few seeds reproduce such seeds which are not viable.

Disadvantages are :

  • Vegetatively propagated plants are short-lived, small compared to seed propagated plants.
  • No new varieties can be produced.
  • Skilled persons are required and often expensive compared to seed propagation.
