Step-by-step explanation:

Distance covered between school and book store = 1\dfrac{5}{8} km

Distance covered between book store and grocery store = \dfrac{1}{2} km

Distance covered between grocery store and home = 2\dfrac{3}{4} km

Total distance covered = 1\dfrac{5}{8}+\dfrac{1}{2}+ 2\dfrac{3}{4} km

1\dfrac{5}{8}+\dfrac{1}{2}+ 2\dfrac{3}{4}

=\dfrac{13}{8} +\dfrac{1}{2} +\dfrac{11}{4} (LCM = 8)

=\dfrac{13\times1}{8\times1} +\dfrac{1\times4}{2\times4} +\dfrac{11\times2}{4\times2}

=\dfrac{13}{8} +\dfrac{4}{8} +\dfrac{22}{8}

=\dfrac{13+4+22}{8}

=\dfrac{39}{8}

∴Total distance covered =  \dfrac{39}{8}km

It is less than 5 km.

Difference = 5 - \dfrac{39}{8}

5 - \dfrac{39}{8} (LCM = 8)

=\dfrac{5\times8}{1\times8}  - \dfrac{39\times1}{8\times1}

=\dfrac{40}{8}  - \dfrac{39}{8}

=\dfrac{40-39}{8}

= \dfrac{1}{8}

∴ Difference = \dfrac{1}{8}
