The group in which the element is the valency depends on that.
Group 1 - Valency 1
2 - 2
3 - 3
4 - 4
5 - (8-5) = 3
6 - (8-6) = 2
7 - 1
8 - 0
Atomic no. is the the no. of protons and the elements are arranged as per their no. of protons in the periodic table. So,
Hydrogen- 1
Helium - 2
and so on.
