3 ( THREE)

hyy ...

the valency of phosphorus is 3.

3

Likewise, one atom of phosphorus combines with three atoms of hydrogen to form the normal hydride phosphine, PH3. Therefore, the valency of phosphorus is 3 only.

Valency of 3 is due to requirement of 3 more electrons to complete it's octet. The valency of 5 is due to excitation of an electron from 3s orbitals to 3d orbital . This leads in formation of 5 sp3d hybrid orbitals and hence phosphorous shows a valency of 5.
