Valency:
- Valency is the combining capacity of an atom. It means the number of valence electrons present in the outermost shell of an atom.
- Valency can be positive or negative.
- Metals donate electrons and form positive ions. Non metals accept electrons and form negative ions.
Electronic configuration:
- Valency of an element can be found out by writing its electronic configuration. There are a set of rules to be followed while writing these Electronic Configurations.
- In the first shell that is K shell, there should be a maximum of only 2 electrons as it can hold only 2 electrons.
- In the upcoming shells like L shell, M shell, N shell and so on, there can only be 8 electrons in its outermost shell.
