Vallam kali is a traditional boat race in Kerala conducted every year around the
festival in autumn. Vallam kali literally means boat game in
Paddled longboats of many kinds are raced during Vallam kali. The
major event is the racing of the Chundan Vallam, also called the 'snake boat' due to its
curved rear end. Hence Vallam kali is also known as the
Race. The
snake boats are said to have their origins in Alappuzha where they were used as navy
boats for war by kings.​

Vallam kali includes races of many kinds of paddled longboats,and fame in kerala the traditional boats of Kerala. Each team spent about 6 lakh rupees for nehru trophy.
