Vallathol, Kumaran Asan and Ulloor are known as the poet trio in Malayalam literature. Similarly, P. Bhaskaran, Vayalar Ramavarma and ONV Kurup are widely regarded as the communist poet trio. A movement that acceptedthe communist ideology as its life breath has beentaken up their poems andsongs as political hymns. No poets who lived before or after this trio have enjoyed a political reception as them on the political front. With the demise of ONV Kurup, the last of this trio has left the world. A criticwho examines their songs on the whole may consider P. Bhaskaran to be one step ahead of the others for his sharpness and poignancy. Apart from Vayalar and ONV, Bhaskaran’s involvement in building up the movement is significant. He held up a red flag, worked among working class, went in underground, courted arrest, was subjected police brutality in custody, was banned from a provincial country, witnessed the ban of his own book and suffered imprisonment. He was even dismissed from his job at All India Radio for his Communist relations.Bhaskaran, who was borninto a family named Pulloott in Kodungalloor on April 21, 1924, had a Congress adherence. His father Padmanabha Menon was a progressiveCongressman and Gandhian. When a procession led by A. K. Gopalan came to Kodungalloor with a demand that members oflower caste be allowed entry into Kodunagalloor temple, Padmanabha Menon went in person and garlanded AKG. He also provided a food for those who attended the procession at his own house. Menon’s actions intensified the progressive mindset of his son. When he arrived in Ernakulam to study in Maharaja' s College, Bhaskaran was regularly wearing khadi. But his time at this college totally changed his political views. He became a staunch Communist and became a leader of the Student Federation which was a pro-Communist outfit.
