The Bible says, 'Treat others as you wish to be treated by them.' Respect is the first principle of social etiquette. This aspect has been highlighted in the story, The Letter. Ali is hurt deeply by the callous and mocking attitude of the head postmaster and the postmen. His pain is not understood at all by any of them. They fail to see his anguished heart. However, the head postmaster's own suffering concerning his ill daughter compels him to empathize with Ali. He realizes the severity of  his pain. He becomes so respectful to him. He waits for his arrival to hand over Miriam's letter to him. However, he soon comes to know about Ali's demise. He feels so remorseful for having behaved rudely with Ali. He himself goes to deliver the letter to Ali's grave as was his last death wish. At the end, he is shown full of regret for not having respected Ali.
