(-1/2)^8 since if the bases are equal then the powers should be added.

 = ( { - 1 \div 2})^{5}  \times ( { - 1 \div 2}^{3} ) \\  = ( { - 1 \div 2})^{5 + 3}  \\  = ( { - 1 \div 2})^{8}  \\  = ( {2 \div 1})^{8}  \\   = ({2})^{8}  \\  = 256
