Hey there!
Here is your answer_

There is (in my knowledge) no explanation for this, but according to the trigonometric identities,
sin^2∆+cos^2∆=1
Rearranging it,
sin^2∆ - 1 = cos^2∆

I think either the question has a mistake, or it's just a trick question and the answer remains the same.

Hope I helped!!

thegr8mustreply: what's wrong?
max4358: Rearranging equation is wrong
thegr8mustreply: oh yeah
thegr8mustreply: it is minus cos square theta
thegr8mustreply: continuation...
max4358: sin^2x-1=-cos^2x
max4358: ok
max4358: Thanks
thegr8mustreply: now multiplying both sides by -1, the answer comes out to be cos square theta
