Covalent Compounds: Compounds formed by sharing of electrons.
PCl3 is a covalent Compound.
Valency of Phosphorus is 3.
Number of Electrons in outermost shell of Phosphorus is 5.
When Number of electrons in outermost shell is greater than 4 then,
Valency = 8 - Number of electrons in outermost shell
Valency of Phosphorus = 8 - 5 = 3
- There are 5 electrons in the outermost shell of Phosphorus and 7 electrons in outermost shell of chlorine.
- Phosphorus (P) shares three electrons with 3 atoms of Chlorine (Cl) and its remaining 2 electrons form 1 lone pair.
- Each Chlorine (Cl) shares 1 electron with Phosphorus (P).
