There can be various reasons for migration....

  1. Unemploymet
  2. Lack of resources

UNEMPLOYMENT -It is observed that people living in an area migrate when less employment opportunities are there. So this is the reason that cities are densely populated, as it is accepted that it provide more job opportunities.

LACK OF RESOURCES - People migrate from those areas where there is less resources to sustain life. Resources such as food, water and a better climate are needed to sustain life. So areas like desert, polar areas are leastly populated, and northern plains of India are densely populated because there are more resources and fertile land too.
