Van Helmond was a Dutch scientist who lived in the 17th century. He did not know about photosynthesis or about chemical elements. Van Helmond carried out an experiment to try and find out what plants are made of.

From the results of his experiment, Van Helmond concluded that; ‘therefore 164 pounds of wood, barks and roots arose out of water only.‘ This puzzled Van Helmond. Use your knowledge of plant growth to explain where the mass came from that made up ‘164 pounds of wood, bark and roots’.
