The History of the present Patan District can be distinctly traced from the end of the 7th Century onwards. At earlier Patan was known as The Anhilwad Patan. Colonel Tode said about Anhilwad Patan that its radius was 12 kaus i.e. 36 miles. It had 84 choks & 84 Chautas & Mints for gold and silvers coins. Vanraj Chavda founded it in 746 A.D. he put foundation stone of Anhilwad Patan on Saturday, Ashadh sud 3rd, of Vikram Savant 802 on the bank of the pious river Saraswati in memory of his friend Anhil Bharwad, at Anawada village, 993 V.S. Solanki dynasty ruled Patan for 302 years. It was a golden period of Gujarat. During the Solanki era Patan and nearby area assumed tremendous importance, under the reign of Karnadev and Siddahraj, Patan attained its greatest splendour & highest prosperity. Patan was the capital of Gujarat. The popular Solanki rulers built famous monuments besides 7224 step wells & about 5125 ponds-lakes for the people ending the wrath of water shortage.

When Vanraj Chavda and the Solanki or Chaulukya dynasty were in power, Ahilpur Patan was renowned as their capital. Strong rulers like Kumarpal, Siddhraj Jaisinh, and King Bhimdev ruled over Patan. Kings' secretaries in various Chaulukya kingdom eras included Udan, Munjal Mehta, and Tejpal - Vastupal. Jain scholars such as Hemchandrachrya, Shanti Suri, and Shripal had given the kingdom guidance.
• Jain scholar Acharya Hemchandrachrya wrote on grammar, philosophy, and modern history. He was also a poet. He was given the moniker "Kalikal Sarvgna," which means "the all-knowing of the Kali Yuga."
• Two well-known architectural landmarks have been designated as national monuments. Sahastralinga Tank and Rani ki Vav Stepwell are two examples. An beautifully built stepwell called Rani ki vav can be seen in the Gujarati town of Patan. It is situated along the Saraswati River's banks.
• For his queen Rani Udaymati, the 11th-century AD king Bhimdev, the Rani ki vav was constructed as a memorial. On June 22, 2014, it was included on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. Sahastralinga Tank, also known as Sahasralinga Talav, is a mediaeval artificial water tank that was built during the Chaulukya (Solanki) era and is another historical landmark in Patan.
• Anhilpur Patan, the former capital of Gujarat State, is well-known for its rich cultural history, complex sculptures, and handicrafts like the Patola Sari.
