2Fe + 3Cl2-----------> 2FeCl3(Volatile salt-reddish brown fumes produced)
As chlorine is a strong oxidizing agent, only the higher oxide (Fe3+) is formed, if Iron[II] is even formed, it is immediately oxidized to Iron[III] by chlorine gas.
The reddish brown fumes can be dissolved in water to form a yellow solution of Ferric Chloride.
Ferric chloride is a deliquescent salt that has formula in its crystalline form FeCl3.6H2O .
