Given: The vapor density of SO₂ = V

             Vapor density of the volatile substance, v = 3V

To Find: Molecular mass of volatile substance, m.

Solution:

To calculate m, the formula used:

  • Vapor density = Molecular mass / 2

Applying the above formula:

Vapor density of SO₂, V = Molecular mass of SO₂ (M) / 2

V = M/2

here, M = atomic mass of Sulphur + 2(atomic mass of Oxygen)

             = 32 + 2 x 16

             = 32 + 32

             = 64g/mol

So, V = 64 / 2

    V  = 32                             ⇒1

As, v = 3 x V

     V = v / 3                               ⇒2

On comparing equations 1 and 2:

v / 3 = 32

v = 32 x3

v  = 96

Applying the above formula of vapor density:

v = m / 2

96 = m / 2

m /2 = 96

m = 96 x 2

   = 192 g

m = 192 g/mol

Hence, the molecular mass of the volatile substance is 192 g/mol.
