The formula used is:
2Xvapour density=mass of molecule.
mass of S=32.0,oxygen=16
2 X 40=32.0+16 X x
after solving we get x=3
so the formula will be SO3

hope that helps, have a nice day.

Answer: x = 3

Explanation:

Relation between vapour density and molecular weight is:

2 * vapour density = Molecular weight

As the vapour density is given 40, therefore molecular weight is:

Molecular weight = 2* 40 = 80

Molecular weight of SO_{x} can be also be calculated as:

Molecular weight of SO_{x} = Atomic weight of S + Atomic weight of O * x  = 32 + 16 x

32 + 16 x = 80

16 x = 80 -32 = 48

x = \frac{48}{16} = 3

It means number of oxygen atoms are 3.
