Variations are the changes that occur in the organisms. These variations may give the species survival advantage.

For eg.

Due to certain variations some bacteria became resistant to heat and survived even when there was a rise in temperatue because of the heat wave, while the other bacteria which did not have this variation died.

So here the resistance to heat ensured the survival of some of the organisms and prevented the species from getting extinct.
