Variations are useful for survival of species bit variations have unequal chances of survival.
This is because when a niche of a population is changed then the existing species are at a danger but if some has variations then there are chances of survival.
But in case if variations are harmful then there is more danger to the survival of species i.e. species will not survive if variations are harmful.

variation is useful for survival of species like the green beetle made from existing beetles had a survival advantage as the crows or other birds were not able to see them in green bushes or grass but the blue beetles which were made from red beetles didn't get any survival advantage as crows and other birds can easily see them and est them. thus variations have unequal chances of survival.
