There are 4 types of solar and lunar eclipses given below with the conditions:
SOLAR ECLIPSE
• A Total Eclipse takes place when the Moon completely hides the intensely bright Sun, allowing a faint solar corona only to be visible.
During a total eclipse, the totality takes place on a narrow track on the surface of the Earth.
This track is known as the path of totality.
• An Annular Eclipse takes place when Sun, Moon and the Earth are in one straight line, but the since the size of Moon being smaller than Sun.
Hence, Sun appears like a bright diamond ring.
• A Hybrid Eclipse moves between a total and annular eclipse.
It can be viewed as a total eclipse from certain place on the earth whereas; on the other parts of the earth it is viewed as an annular eclipse.
Hybrid eclipses are a rare phenomenon.
• A Partial Eclipse takes place when Sun, Moon are not really in line with Earth.
Here the Moon will be only able to partially hide the Sun.
This eclipse can viewed from a large part of the Earth.
However, some eclipses are partial, because the umbra passes above the poles of the earth and do not intersect the surface.
LUNAR ECLIPSE
• A Penumbral Lunar Eclipse takes place when the Moon moves through the penumbra of Earth.
The penumbra of the Earth causes a faint dimming of the surface of Moon.
A total penumbral lunar eclipse is special type where the Moon lies entirely within penumbra of the Earth.
• A Partial Lunar Eclipse takes place when just a part of Moon enters umbra of the Earth.
A Total Lunar Eclipse takes place when Moon is entirely in the umbra.
• A Central Lunar Eclipse is total eclipse where the Moon passes through the center of the shadow of the Earth making a contact at the anti-solar point. This is a rare type of lunar eclipse.
