Overview of the Lymphatic System

The lymphatic system is closely related to or can be considered part of the immune system. The lymphatic system develops, stores and circulates immune cells to fight infections.

Lymph Vessels and Lymph Nodes

Fluid in connective tissue (between cells) is absorbed by small lymph capillaries. Lymph flows through lymph vessels to and from the lymph nodes. The vessels have valves to prevent backflow.

Cells of the Immune System

Cells of the immune system, white blood cells, are derived from a common stem cell in bone marrow and develop along two different lines:

Myeloid cells: mature in the bone marrow

Lymphoid cells: mature in the thymus

Functions of Immune Cells

All immune system cells work together to fight infections of bacteria, viruses and parasites. Some cells can also recognize abnormal body cells (e.g. tumor cells).
