What kind of printing press are you referring to? There are several different kinds of printing presses, each in different occupations. There is your standard printing industry that use offset printing presses that print everything you get in the mail. These presses can also print on plastic, like the flower descriptions that you find with potted plants at the nursery. Generally these types of printing presses only print on paper or thin sheets of plastic Mylar in sizes up to 30″ x 60″.
There are Flexo printing presses that use a raised-image plate that prints directly onto the surface of the material being printed, like airline tickets, sticky labels, plastic wrap, etc.
There are printing presses that print cans, like your beer cans; plastic cups with logos, etc.
Most of the above printing presses use UV Inks, which basically is a plastic polymer that is in the consistency of ink. When this ink is moved under a high intensity Ultra Violet Light it hardens into plastic that adheres to the material it is applied to. It only takes a second to ‘flash’ the UV ink into drying, which allows the printing press to reach speeds up to 1200 fpm (Feet Per Minute).
I am sure there are others in industries I am not familiar with.
