Step-by-step explanation:

x+y=24/2=>X+y=12

x-y=8/2=>x-y=4

Solving both equations,

X+y=12

x-y=4

---------

2x=8

X=4

Replace the value of X in any equation

then ,

X+y=12

4+y=12

y=12-4

y=8

Hope it will help you

• Let still water be x and current water be y.

Speed for downstream = (x + y) km

Speed for upstream = (x - y) km

CASE 1)

» Vedant can row down stream 24 km in 2 hours.

We know that

Speed = Distance/time

=> x + y = 24/2

=> x + y = 12 ________ (eq 1)

____________________________

CASE 2)

» Also, Vedant can row upstream 8 km in 2 hours.

Speed = Distance/time

=> x - y = 8/2

=> x - y = 4 _________ (eq 2)

______________________________

Add (eq 1) and (eq 2)

=> x + y + x - y = 12 + 4

=> 2x = 16

=> x = 8

Put value of x in (eq 1)

=> 8 + y = 12

=> y = 12 - 8

=> y = 4

_____________________________

• Speed for downstream = x + y = 8 + 4

=> 12 km/hr

• Speed for upstream = x - y = 8 - 4

=> 4 km/hr

• Speed in still water = 8 km/hr

• Speed in current water = 4 km/hr
