Vedant can row down stream 24 km in 2 hours and upstream 8 km in 2 hours. Find his speed of rowing in still water?​

Answer:

Rowing spead in still water is 8 km / hr

Speed of the water current is 4 km / hr

Given :

Downstream Speed = 24 km / 2 hr

Downstream Speed = 24 km / 2 hr = 12 km / hr

Upstream Speed = 8 km / 2 hr

Upstream Speed = 8 km / 2 hr = 4km / hr

Let the rowing speed = x km/ hr

And, current speed = y km/ hr

So,

x+ y = 12 ----- ( 1 )

And, x-y = 4 ----- ( 2 )

If we subtract ( 2 ) from ( 1 )

If we subtract ( 2 ) from ( 1 )We will get

( x + y ) - ( x - y ) = 12-4

x+y - x+y = 8

2y = 8

y = 4

Now, putting the value of ' y ' into ( 1 )

Now, putting the value of ' y ' into ( 1 ) We get ,

x+4= 12

x = 12-4

x = 4

So, the rowing speed is 8 km/hr. ( Answer )

And the current speed is 4 km/hr. ( Answer )
