Finding 639² means 639 X 639.

   Here " | " means separation of one digit in the result from another digit.  D( ) means the digit from the number inside parentheses.

639²  =  D(6)   |  D(63)      |      D(639)         |   D(39)       |   D(9)
         =     6²    |  2 x 6 x 3 |   2 x 6 x 9 + 3²  |  2 x 3 x 9    |    9²
         =    36    |   36          |        117            |      54         |  81
         =    36    |    36         |        117            |     54+8      |   1
         =    36    |    36         |        117 + 6      |      2           |    1
         =    36    |     36        |        123            |      21
         =    36    |     36+12  |          3              |      21
         =  36+4  |      8        |      321
         = 408, 321
