In temperate grasslands, grasses dominate the place. Large trees and shrubs are rarely common in these biomes due to the low moderate precipitation which makes these grasslands a difficult place for tall plants such as woody shrubs and trees to grow. Due to the fact that these grasses are adapted to survive long periods of drought as well as the cold temperatures and occasional fires, they have deep massive root systems that take hold in the soil which allows the plants to remain firmly rooted in the ground to reduce erosion and to conserve more water. Some underground stems and buds not easily destroyed by fire, which makes it a safe place for these plants to live in this biome. The most common grasses include Blue Gamma grass, Buffalo grass, Johnson grass, Pampas grass and various sorts of wheat and bully. Some flowers are asters, coneflowers, solidagos (goldenrods), vetches, Indian blankets, and sweet clovers.

The grasses that are located in temperate grasslands can vary sizes from being very short or very big and tall depending on the amount of rainfall they receive. In areas where the amount of precipitation is low, the grasses consists of shorter species. Warmer areas that receive more rain are home to taller species of grasses including sagebrush, cacti, sunflowers, and clovers.
