Explanation:

The velocity of an electromagnetic wave in a medium is given by

v = c/n(λfree)

Where,

v = speed/ velocity of electromagnetic waves

n = is the index of refraction of the medium

λfree = wavelength of waves

c = speed of light c = 3*108 m/s

However, when there is difference of mediums with different refractive indices, then the value of velocity and wavelength changes but the frequency remains the same

The velocity of an electromagnetic wave in the medium is dependent on the magnetic and electric properties of the medium.

  • Electromagnetic waves are different from mechanical waves, as a propagating medium is not required.
  • Thus, electromagnetic waves are capable to travel through solids, vaccum, as well as through the air.
  • An electromagnetic wave transfers its energy at a speed of 3 × 10`8 m/s through a vacuum. The transmission of an electromagnetic wave through a material medium takes place at a net velocity which is less than 3 × 10`8 m/s
