Concept:

  • Relative velocity
  • The velocity of an object in relation to another observer is known as its relative velocity.
  • It is the pace at which one object's relative location changes in relation to another object over time.

Given:

  • The velocity of man = Vm
  • The velocity of the river = Vr
  • Width of the river = d

Find:

  • The shortest time for the man to cross the river

Solution:

For the man to take the least amount of time to cross the river, the relative velocity has to be the greatest.

This is possible only when the velocity of the man and the river are in the same direction.

V = Vm +Vr

The distance to be covered is d

time = d/v

time = d/Vm +Vr

The time taken to cross the river is d/(Vm+Vr)
