Previous studies of the shape and stability of the free surface in the float zone process have only included the surface tension and the hydrostatic pressure. If a radio-frequency induction coil is used to melt the feed rod, then it produces an inward electromagnetic body force at the free surface. The previous treatments of free surface shape and stability are extended to include this electromagnetic body force. This force pinches the float zone and produces a smaller minimum radius, relative to the feed rod and crystal radii. For a coil which is close to the free surface, a sufficiently strong electromagnetic force destabilizes the surface
