Concept:

  • Relative velocity
  • Angular velocity
  • Application of vectors

Given:

  • The distance between particles A and B = 20m
  • Speed of particle A v1 = 50 m/s
  • Speed of particle B v2 = 100√3 m/s

Find:

  • Angular velocity of particle B with respect to particle A

Solution:

Downward vertical velocity of A = 50 sin 30 = 25 m/s

Horizontal velocity of A towards left = 50 cos 30 = 43.3 m/s

Upward vertical velocity of B = 100√3 sin 60 = 150 m/s

Horizontal velocity of B towards left =  100√3 sin 30 = 50√3

Relative velocity towards the left = 50√3 - 43.3 = 43.3 m/s

Relative velocity vertically = 150-(-25) = 175 m/s

Consider only vertical relative velocity as it is perpendicular to the distance

Relative angular velocity = v/r = 175/20 = 8.75

The angular velocity of B with respect to A is 8.75
