Given:

A velocity-time graph has been provided for two vehicles A and B.

To find:

Which graph shows accelerated motion and which one shows retarded motion?

Solution:

  • Acc. = \dfrac{dv}{dt}=slope \:of\:v-t \:graph

  • The above equation shows that the slope of a velocity time graph gives us acceleration.

  • So, any velocity-time graph with positive slope will give acceleration and those with positive slope will give retardation.

  • \tan(\theta) represents the slope , where \theta is the angle between curve and time axis.

  • So, when \theta is acute, the value of \tan(\theta) is positive and vice versa.

For Vehicle A:

 \therefore \: acc. = \dfrac{dv}{dt} = \tan( \theta) > 0

Since slope is positive, hence the car is accelerating.

For Vehicle B:

 \therefore \: acc. = \dfrac{dv}{dt} = \tan( \theta) < 0

Since slope is positive, hence the car is retarding.

Hope It Helps.
