In Paddy cultivation irrigation is extremely important. It requires stagnant water throughout the growth period. Flooded soils are extremely beneficial as it helps in providing higher quantities of nutrients like phosphorus, manganese and iron.  Further, submergence of crop helps in suppressing growth of weeds. It is to be remembered that excess, limited or scarcity of water results in huge reduction in yield in paddy cultivation.

In contrast, in the case of Maize cultivation irrigation is required at the very time of sowing in the field.  Again, depending on the soil type and season irrigation is required on the 3rd or 4th day. It may not be required during monsoon. In the early stages of Maize cultivation unlike in paddy, water stagnation should be avoided and the drainage system should be good. For the first four weeks irrigation is required lesser times and after that only once a week.

Therefore I would advise Venkatesh not to follow the same practice of rice for maize cultivation.
