Use x to represent the number of years from now, when Vikki will be twice as old as Vera.

x + 13 = 2(x+4)

x + 13 = 2x + 8

x - 2x = 8 - 13 (collection of like terms)

-x = -5 (multiply or divide both sides of the equation by -1)

x = 5

x = 5 years

In five years time, Vikki will be twice as old as Vera.

Checking:

Vera: 4years + 5 years = 9 years

Vikki: 13 years + 5 years = 18 years

The ratio of 18 years to 9 years = ratio 2 : 1 .

Present age of

Vera is 4 years and vikki is 13 years old

Let after x years Vikki is twice as old as Vera

Then the age of

Vera will be ( x + 13) years

Vikki will be ( x + 4) years

By the given condition

(x + 13) = 2(x  + 4)

 \implies \: x + 13 = 2x + 8

 \therefore \: x \:  = 5

So after 5 years Vikki will be twice as old as Vera

Then the age of Vera will be = 4 + 5 = 9 years

The age of Vikki will be = 13 + 5 = 18 years
