Solution:
LHS =[2/5+(-3/4)]+(-4/7)
= (2/5-3/4)-4/7
= [(8-15)/20] - 4/7
= -7/20 - 4/7
= (-49 - 80 )/140
= -129/140 ---(1)
RHS = 2/5 + [-3/4+(-4/7)]
= 2/5 + (-3/4-4/7)
= 2/5 + [(-21-16)/28]
= 2/5 - 37/28
= ( 56 - 185)/140
= -129/140 ---(2)
From (1) and (2), we conclude that,
LHS = RHS
Therefore,
(2/5 +-3/4)+-4/7=2/5+(-3/4+-4/7)
i.e
(a+b)+c = a+(b+c)
